Seattle’s deadline teardown continued in dramatic fashion with its biggest deal yet, shipping first baseman Pete Alonso and starting pitcher Corbin Burnes to the Boston Stouts. In return, the Whistlers receive first baseman Kody Clemens, starting pitcher Michael King, and Boston’s second-round pick in the upcoming draft. After already dealing Brent Rooker and Harrison Bader earlier in the day, Seattle has now parted with four of the club’s most recognizable veterans, signaling a full-scale roster reset as the franchise shifts its focus toward future flexibility and untapped potential.
The move is a clear win-now play for Boston, which continues its pursuit of a playoff berth. The Stouts have been searching for another impact bat to complement an already formidable pitching staff, and they’ll hope a change of scenery helps Alonso rediscover the form that made him one of the league’s premier power hitters. Despite a disappointing first half in which he’s batting just .194 with three home runs and an 89 OPS+, Boston believes the slugger is capable of carrying the middle of the lineup down the stretch. The Stouts also strengthen an already impressive rotation by adding Burnes, who owns a 3.86 ERA despite a 1-3 record this season. He is expected to step directly into the rotation in place of Nick Lodolo.
For Seattle, the emphasis remains on turning established veterans into future assets and fresh opportunities. Kody Clemens is expected to assume the everyday first base job vacated by Alonso, while Michael King will immediately fill Burnes’ spot in the starting rotation. Combined with another valuable draft pick, the Whistlers continue to reshape both their roster and their long-term outlook. By the end of the deadline, Seattle’s lineup could bear little resemblance to the club that opened the season, making the Whistlers one of the unquestioned focal points of this year’s trade market.
