Noah Cameron nearly etched his name into Pennant League history, coming within three outs of the league’s first-ever no-hitter in a dominant performance for the Portland Quakes. Facing one of the league’s best offenses in the Arlington Desperados, Cameron carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning before center fielder Andy Pages finally broke it up with Arlington’s lone hit of the afternoon. The near-historic outing was more than enough to secure the sweep for Portland, as Cameron went eight innings and allowed just the one hit in a 2-0 victory. Carlos Estévez handled the ninth, closing out the shutout and earning the save.
The only offense Cameron would need came from Spencer Torkelson, whose two-run double provided all of Portland’s scoring. Luis Castillo kept Arlington within striking distance, tossing six innings and allowing just those two runs, but the Desperados simply couldn’t generate enough against Cameron. For a team facing the league’s top club, it was a frustrating end to the series – and a statement performance from Portland’s pitching staff.
The victory pushes the Quakes to 20-10 and gives them a two-game cushion over Arlington for first place in the league. With the two teams entering the series as the league’s top two clubs, Portland’s sweep could prove significant as the standings tighten in the second half. Cameron may have fallen just short of history, but his near-no-hitter helped deliver one of the biggest wins of the season for the league-leading Quakes.
